There’s umpteen hand crank emergency type radios to choose from with more manufacturers falling on the band wagon all the time. All these radios makes me wonder if the electronics world is filled with over zealous optimists or this particular potential market is actually big enough for them all to turn a profit?.
The Top End!
Anybody who spends time looking at a wide range of radio equipment will recognize those hand crank radios at the top end of the market.
With Eton’s Extensive Range, Kaito and even a model or two from Sagean!, you’d think there was little room left but with an art in copying design that’s just short of pure plagiarism, it constantly amazes me how many there are (just put ‘hand crank radio’ into a shopping website and see what I mean).
Unbranded and Unrecognized Hand Crank Radio Goods
Passable L.E.D’s are dirt cheap these days and while they won’t throw out quantities of light the way (non fake) CREE L.E.D devices do, they’re good enough for a basic emergency torch.
Add this to low electronics production costs in certain countries along with the option to buy bulk and get them shipped with any branding you wish, means you’ll often happen across survival hand crank radios without any brand marking or a brand you’ve never ever seen in your life.
Finding these listed through online stores and bargain real world shops has long since stopped being a surprise for me, but it can be entertaining to see some of the slightly cheesy brand names these products have.
I can’t personally vouch for the performance of any brand not instantly memorable because even though there’s the odd anomaly where an unknown radio comes up trumps, they get avoided like the plague 🙂
